ICT funding diverted to set up free schools

The Department for Education’s news desk today confirmed that capital funding earmarked for the government’s Free Schools programme has been diverted from the Harnessing Technology Grant that was previously at Becta’s disposal.

ICTzine was told that the £50m will go towards the capital costs involved in purchasing land and materials. It will also go towards the ICT costs, but it is expected that this will be paid for by the per pupil funding. This figure will be reviewed on an annual basis, as the building programme progresses.

The new Free Schools will also be incentivised to concentrate on the poorest children by the introduction of this Government’s Pupil Premium which will see schools receiving extra funds for educating children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
